2009

And so another 365 days fly past. Now, to bring some closure to this eventful year:

1) School
I suppose I did awake from my almost-eternal trance and studied... just enough to pass. And after much research, insight and fickleness, I might have a bare clue about what to do with my academic future!

2) NYCO
NYCO has been a pleasure to serve and be in! Some rocky roads leave skin-deep injuries, but fortunately nothing is left unhealed. I am proud to say that NYCO has changed my life. (: In terms of music, learning progress has been slow so hopefully 2010 will be a year filled with opportunities to improve! And YQP will always be the best bunch to be with!

My commitment to fencing leaves a lot to be desired; 3 months of lessons have been missed! I need to reconsider my time management to end Coach's nagging. /: As for theatre, my interest and involvement have balanced nicely at a comfortable level, though the occasional... 'starstrike' happens. Hee! Valentia, Emily and Ayla have been recruited into the theatre geek family! (But it's not an empire, really. Really.)

3) People
人有悲欢离合,月有阴晴圆缺。Indeed! The earlier part of the year was pretty rough but thanks to really great friends, I made it to a much more pleasant year end. Learning take-back is to BE BRAVE! (I am a mouse who hides from awkward turtles.) I've learnt to appreciate the deeper side of some people and formed two or three very interesting friendships! :P

4) As a person
To take everything with a pinch of salt. Nothing is more serious than humour! I am slightly more motivated about getting ahead in life. And I am trying to be a kinder person (and trying not to laugh at the prospect)... HAHAHA!

The new decade seems promising!

On this note, I think years are a great research topic for the bored. The very last second of the countdown turns 2009 You into 2010 You. The fine line we cross every 365 (and a quarter) days. (It sounds very routine, like that. I wonder what the big deal about it is.)

I am feeling erratic...

Anti-phobia

I have refound my admiration for Hugh Laurie! Cambridge graduate, musical talent, excellent actor, cool at 50.

School starts in three weeks. How awful. I have to start math revision soon. Tomorrow I am storming out and buying myself an SAT guide. Sorry Singapura, I love you but I'm GETTING OUT OF HERE (if funds flow smooth). Sometimes you have to breathe outside the bubble.

*Begin self-indulgence*

People have been asking me why I didn't transfer schools in the end. If I say nothing, most would suppose I'm in for the prestige. Which is true, but not entirely. I'm just thinking ahead. This school will help me get out there; further. We still live by titles. It's a truth that we don't want to acknowledge because it's plain lugubrious!

Which brings me to the point of getting out of here. There is really something wrong with the Singaporean system. I'm not quite sure how many people feel this way. There is no exact thing I could put my finger on, but in a nutshell, it is all about what you have besides the degree. Because everyone has the paper. Even if I'm unsuccessful, I want to do many things. And we are still a little too passive for ambition. So maybe this isn't the right place for me yet. Perhaps time will tell.

Am I suffering from Banana Syndrome? Pishposh, I say. I am quite proud that the Utah has adopted Singapore's system of teaching math. Smarts-wise, we're fine. Sometimes we are better. All we need is a little more room to wander off-limits.

*End self-indulgence*

Beauty & the Beast

I'm not going to review B&B (by W!LD RICE) because I loved it. Loved it. Loved it.

It was really moving to watch the closing show; some of the cast were actually tearing up as the audience gave a standing ovation.

And I learnt that ignorance is bliss because when you find out that your favourite actors are gay, your heart shatters into stardust.

So I don't forget

1) Front-of-house with W!LD has been fun. This year's crowd seems a little... older though. (?)

2) Broadway Beng was awesome! I swear my Hokkien improved after the show. Took pictures with Sebastian Tan and Royston Tan (hahaha suck it up, Emily and Valentia)! They're both awesome (:

3) I don't want to work.

4) 6I's average height increased by, uh, 10cm. Still a crazy bunch, as usual!

One silent hammer for me, please!

Post-jetlag

Okay let's try to recap...

What I learnt in the US

1) The weather in California is really lovely.

2) The people are friendlier, which somehow compels you to be more sociable and smile more.

3) Operation Travis members are very weird. Valentia is a manic shopaholic. Michelle never buys anything. Sarah likes revealing her midriff in public. Jacquelyn likes G. I. Joe. Meiqi is a closet perv. Ziyan makes very clever observations about Tellytubbies.

4) Most of the colleges are really into school spirit and have incredible campuses. And they're very much into being all-rounded, which sounds pretty appealing to me.

5) Disneyland is magical. Seriously! Behind all that commercialism, there is something really great about Walt Disney's success in bringing everlasting entertainment to the world.

6) Contrary to common belief, there were VERY few McDonald's shops in California (well, in San Francisco and LA, at least). The most widespread F&B chain was Starbucks. Yes. Starbucks is the next evil empire. There were more Starbucks shops than McDonald's and Burger King combined.

7) The first thing the local students ask us is, "Can you guys chew gum in Singapore?" The answer is yes. We can chew gum. But you can't import it. In the US there are little black spots on the ground everywhere. That's chewing gum caked with dirt.

Evidently, my memory fails me. Oh well!
